Mammography and Breast Ultrasound Assessment Mammogram and breast ultrasound results are interpreted according to the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS). This ensures accurate and consistent communication of diagnostic results between medical teams. After completing assessment, the radiologist will recommend a course of action.
BI-RADs 0: Incomplete, need Additional Imaging Evaluation and / or prior mammograms for comparison.
BI-RADs 1: Negative, no abnormalities detected. Annual screening is recommended.
BI-RADs 2: Benign findings, such as calcification or cysts.
BI-RADs 3: Probably benign, with a very low probability of being cancerous. The radiologist will recommend re-examination every 6 – 12 months for 2 years recommended for absolute reassurance.
BI-RADs 4: Suspicious for malignancy, the radiologist will likely recommend following up with a tissue biopsy to confirm a diagnosis.
BI-RADs 5: Highly suggestive of malignancy, a follow-up tissue biopsy to confirm the diagnosis will be recommended.
BI-RADs 6: Known biopsy-proven malignancy, proven cancer that has not completed definitive treatment. If this is the case, treatment is necessary.
