  • Post-procedure instruction
    1. Apply a cold gel pack to the biopsy site during the first 24 hours.

Intervention Procedures

  • Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy
    1. The nurse/assistant will position the patient lying flat and expose the area to be biopsied, cleaning the skin with a disinfectant solution.
    2. The physician will perform an ultrasound to locate the abnormality, provide local anesthesia, and in-sert the special 1.6 mm diameter biopsy needle to extract a tissue sample. The nurse/assistant will then apply pressure and dress the lesion.
  • Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
    1. The patient lies prone on the examination bed with the affected breast sticking out through the opening.
    2. The radiologist compresses and images the breast similar to mammogram to identify the abnormal area.
    3. Once the radiologist detects the location, the nurse/assistant cleans the skin with a disinfectant so-lution.
    4. The physician performs local anesthesia and uses 1.6 mm biopsy needle to sample the abnormal tissue.
    5. The nurse/assistant applies pressure and dress the small lesion.
  • Stereotactic Vacuum-assisted Breast Biopsy
    6. If a marker clip is placed after biopsy, an additional mammogram may be taken of that breast to con-firm the clip position.
